What Is Parenting Time?

Parenting time, formerly known as visitation, refers to the court-approved arrangement regarding the time a child spends with his or her parents. In Michigan, it is considered to be in the child’s best interests to spend as much time as possible with both parents.

In a “reasonable” or “liberal” parenting time arrangement, parents work together to create a flexible schedule that does not include specific days and time frames to see their children. It allows parents the freedom that is often needed to adjust schedules according to their children’s needs without having to go back to court to modify their agreements.

Other families are part of a “specific” parenting time arrangement involving specific dates and times that each parent spends with his or her children. If changes need to be made to scheduling in this type of arrangement, a new court order is necessary, absent mutual agreement of the parties.
